Speak Out! in Poetry

Writing a poem is a powerful way to express your thoughts - quickly, persuasively, dramatically and uniquely. As we learned, The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child absolutely gives you the right to think for yourself and speak out when you have something important on your mind. It says you have the right to be heard.

Here, you have a forum, which means a discussion space.

In my mind, 3 things make a mockery of the rights of children in many places in the world:

1] Poverty
2] War
3] Devastation of the Earth

Use your own VOICE, "loud and clear" to make others understand what one of these issues means to YOU.

Or choose another world concern that you feel passionate about.

Post your poem here for others around the world to read.

In their shoes....from room 20

I am a child.
By John

Homeless. Thirst. Killed.
I want equal rights and not to have to fight in wars.
Hunger, Disrespect, and being Beaten are the things I can do without.
I don’t get hugs.
I am alive but if I don’t have more protection, I might get killed.
I wish I had parents.
I really need water.
I don’t get respect.
This is me. I am.

I am an abused homeless child.
By: Davante

Homeless. Starving. Thirsty.
I faint when I don’t get enough food,
and I get hurt by people.
Dehydration, Fighting, and Threats are things I can do without.
I hate being beaten.
Sometimes I get extra water, but it’s dirty.
I wish I had parents.
I wish I wasn’t abused.
I wish I had more food and clean water.
This is me. I am.

By Nadia
I’m a child that needs a family
Child labour, Equal rights, Poverty.
I am always hungry and unwanted.
Being beaten, suffering, and poverty are things I don’t need in my life
I’m starving and I need money.
I have a religion but I can’t practice it.
I have no respect
I want to live in a home.
It’s a box
Can I get food and water?
This is me. I am.

I am a War Child.
By Hana

I am a war child.
Poverty, Infanticide, No equal rights.
The facts that we are being killed and sent to prison bring us to tears.
Danger, Suffering, Hunger are things in my life I can do without.
I don’t like how I can’t do anything to defend myself, family and friends from the war.
I used to live in a crowded house
but I had to leave ….
I couldn’t pay rent.
I don’t get to learn about my culture or religion.
I‘m forced to fight in war.
I work in a dangerous factory and get paid cents a day.
This is me. I am.

I am different
By: Mahara

Unwanted , Fight, Killed
I don’t get anything I want and I’m starving.
Child labour, Fight, Sickness are things in my life I can do without.
All my friends are too sick to play with me.
I don’t fight in war, but I suffer from it.
People tease me.
My skin stops me from being adopted.
My shelter is a box.
This is me. I am.

I‘m mistreated
By Aisha

I‘m unwanted How I’m mistreated
And having to fight in war!
Danger, suffering and poverty
are things I can do without
I don’t like how
I have to work at a young age
to feed my family
I do like playing outside but
I sleep on the floor
’cause I’m homeless
I don’t get education
I wish I didn’t have to work
I wish I could be a child…..
This is me. I am.

In response to children who labour in many parts of the world.....

Children who Labour
By Rafia, Grade 5

I feel horrid about children’s slavery,
it is not right!
Parents so poor
these children work so hard
I think this should not be happening.
This is not fair
they are suffering.
I feel unhappy for them
they have to suffer
from others deeds.
what I would do to these dumb people?
I would really
get them
in trouble
and make them work as slaves
do the same as they did to the children.
Now see how it feels
never to have rights
play
school
Child labour is stupid!

Children Slavery
By Musaddique

Children slavery stinks
We all have rights
But what about kids
Some kids have rights
While others don’t
Lots of kids need
F-R-E-E-D-O-M
Freedom is what lots
Of kids need
They need the rights
That we have now

Child’s words
By Ahmed

What is this?
a fight?
Where…. Me… I’m scared
I want my mom
I want my dad
I want to learn
Leave me alone
You man, who you are?
I want to go home if I have one
Why are we working?

Children’s Rights
By: Brianna

I think that children’s rights are very important,
To me it feels like someone had taken something away from you and never giving it back
It makes me feel sad that children had no education then
I think that it shouldn’t happen and so does children laborers
I think children from all over the world should have rights for:
EDUCATION and much more!!!
Lots of people and children die and many had no food
Many children did not even had water and they had to work for food and water
I feel sad.
SO LET”S STOP CHILDREN’S SLAVERY AND CHILDREN’S LABORERS!!!

By Rabaya

If I did not have a job and did not have to go at work at 8:00 then it would feel like FREEDOM! Because you stay home your parents love you and you could help your parents for some work except going to work because no one and absolutely no one likes child slavery. If I was to be going to work I would feel super sad. I do not like child slavery and I never WILL! If I see another child going to work at 8:00 I would be super sad - I will not like it at ALL! Plus if I saw anybody KIDNAPPED I WOULD ABSOLUTLY HATE IT!!! It would be so unfair fair.

Children’s rights
By : Sawda

They’re sad
They can’t do anything back
All they do is work
Day and night
Little kids
Around the world
Working hard
While other people play and dance
They work and work
With nothing to do
They get forced to do everything
While other kid play freely
The kids can’t play
And they eat and drink dirty food
They aren’t free
Like a bird in a cage.

Children Rights
By: Rabbi

Children do have rights
They do work all day
I feel sad for them
And it’s unhappy for them
I feel bad for them
They could have got hurt
It’s unfair for the children
And there’s little kids working
They don’t have love or care
I think of the children,
And who’s beating them up!
